The World of Acrobatics
What happens when you combine the poise of a ballerina, the strength of a weightlifter, and the airtime of an Olympic diver? You get the breathtaking world of Acrobatic Gymnastics.
The Uganda Gymnastics Federation is building up its Acrobatic Gymnastics community. First, we launched the “Uganda Acro”. This is a focused community with a whatsapp group dedicated to providing expert advice to Acrobatic club owners and instructors.
More recently, the Ugandan Acro community was treated to its first - hopefully, of many - exclusive webinars hosted by our very own Hassan Masembe (Ugandan Head of Acro) and facilitated by the esteemed Nikolina Hristova, President of the FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics Technical Committee.
Whether you missed the live session or just need a refresher on the fundamentals, here is your guide to the “Basics of Acrobatics.”
What is Acrobatic Gymnastics?
At its core, Acro is a partnership sport. Athletes perform routines set to music that blend acrobatic skills, dance, and tumbling. Unlike individual gymnastics, the magic of Acro lies in the synchronicity and connection between partners.
The Three Pillars of Performance
In competition, gymnasts typically perform three distinct types of routines, each testing a different physical dimension:
Balance Routine
This is all about poise and “quiet” power.
- * The Focus: Strength, balance, and extreme flexibility.
- * The Skills: Expect to see human pyramids and intricate partner holds.
- * The Rule: Static holds, such as handstands on a partner’s shoulders, must be maintained for a specific duration—usually 3 seconds for pyramids and 2 seconds for partner elements.
- * Individual Elements: Flexibility is showcased through splits, bridges, and walkovers.
Dynamic Routine
If Balance is about stability, Dynamic is about flight.
- * The Focus: Throws, somersaults, and catches.
- * The Action: The “bases” propel the “tops” (agile flyers) into the air to perform twists and saltos before catching them or assisting their landing.
Combined Routine
Reserved for senior levels (such as 12-18 and Adult groups), this routine is the ultimate test, requiring a seamless mix of both Balance and Dynamic elements.
Who Can Compete?
Acrobatic gymnastics offers a place for everyone, categorized into five competitive groupings:
- * Women’s Pair
- * Men’s Pair
- * Mixed Pair
- * Women’s Group (Trio)
- * Men’s Group (Four)
More Than Just Flips: The Artistic Edge
A winning routine isn’t just a list of skills; it’s a performance. Every routine must include:
- * Choreography and Dance: Artistic movement must connect the difficult acrobatic elements to the music.
- * Tumbling: Individual skills like aerials and handsprings are required at many levels.
- * Partnership: Judges look for a harmonious “connection” between the group members.
“Acrobatic gymnastics is the perfect harmony of strength and artistry.”
