UGF Participates in MAG Judging CouRSE

standardised coach education for MAG in Uganda

On the 30th and 31st of August 2025, the Uganda Gymnastics Federation was proud to participate in an online judging course in Men's Artistic Gymnastics [MAG] for Africa. We had a total of 23 Ugandan coaches, Physical Education teachers and Athletics trainers in attendance.

The session was presented by Dr Mohammed Ali, FIG MAG Technical Committee Member, together with Eng Yasser Zayed, President of UAG MAG Technical Committee. The course was organised by the FIG Technical Commitee in conjunction with UAG MAG Technical Committee and UAG Academy. This was the first time for UGF to participate in such a training activity for MAG.

What Is MAG?

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) is a dynamic and thrilling sport that showcases strength, agility, coordination, and precision.

Key Apparatus For MAG

Pommel Horse

This tests endurance and upper body strength with circular movements and pendulous swings

Floor Exercise

A spring-loaded surface where gymnasts combine powerful tumbling passes with strength elements and balance skills

Rings

This requires control, strength, and balance with swinging and strength hold elements

Vault

Here explosive propulsion and acrobatic skills are displayed

Parallel Bars

This is a predominantly swinging apparatus with acrobatic flight elements and dismounts.

Horizontal Bars

This features swinging parts, release and re-grasp movements, and high dismount

The online training programmes for coaches, by FIG experts, are an integral part of the FIG Academy Programme. It was established to ensure coaches from all national federations have access to appropriate training material covering all the FIG disciplines (Gymnastics for All, Men’s Artistic, Women’s Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline, Aerobic, Acrobatic and Parkour).

The Academy Programme has the goal to provide a standardised competency-based coach education system for the development of gymnastics worldwide, based upon principles of sport science, health, current training best practice, and current ethical and safeguarding standards. The courses are delivered in hybrid format (theory lectures online and practical sessions in person). We congratulate Coach Faizo Lugolobi, Head of MAG, and Coach Patrick Olango, Head of Coaches, who championed this successful event.

Reviews From Participants

Thanks coach Faizo for making me one of the few knowledgeable Ugandans in this game. I’ve really been watching the game for fun only. But I’ve achieved massively in judgement aspects. And right here watching a junior gymnastic challenge, I am capable of identifying a number of key aspects and efforts by these young lads.

I will personally invite more colleagues from the PE department to engage with more courses like this.

Impact Beyond the Course

By strengthening the technical level of coaches, UGF continues to raise Uganda’s presence on the continental and global stage in MAG.
